Self Motivation. It is the single most important factor in your life if you want to achieve success in any sphere. Some even consider self-motivation more important that self-esteem, and perhaps rightly so. And the reason is that if you want to improve yourself, your self-esteem, and your life in anyway, then you need to have the desire to do it. So, you may ask, “What is the difference between “motivating others” and “self-motivation”?

When managers and leaders talk about motivating others, they typically refer to two types of motivation - the carrot and the stick.

The carrot approach can be summarized in six words - Do this and you’ll get that! This is an approach where we dangle all types of goodies in front of people to motivate them (free lunches, free dinners, tickets to events, etc.)

A stick approach is often used when the carrot approach does not produce results. The stick approach typically threatens employees with discipline, intimidation, fears, etc.

Self-motivation, on the other hand, relies on the inner drive of each person to achieve results. The battery is inside with self-motivation. The personal energy level of the employee becomes the major source of motivation, that drives him or her to succeed, and achieve breakthrough results. Self-motivation depends on the wellspring of personal energy that resides within each of us.

The good news is that this energy can be tapped by the right conditions - the conditions that surround the game of golf!

Before we get into some of those conditions, it is important to ask, “Why is self-motivation important to managers and leaders”?

Every manager and leader must reach stretch targets and goals through the efforts and commitments of “others”. The self-motivation of the “others” is a strategic edge that determines whether those targets are reached or exceeded.

If the “others” are not self-motivated they exhibit poor performance behaviors - blaming, excusing, rationalizing, bashing, ducking issues, and complying.

If the “others” are self-motivated they exhibit high performance behaviors - taking ownership, showing a sense of urgency, being proactive, showing initiative, demonstrating commitment, and rising above circumstances.

So, what does the game of golf teach managers? It teaches them that their role as a leader is to create an environment that releases motivational energy in their team.

Fortunately, the game of golf provides the valuable, real-life, actionable principles that can help managers to create, build, and maintain this kind of climate in their department or organization.

In other words, they can inject golf course self-motivation into the workplace.

One of the things that golf teaches is the power of choice. I may us pitching wedge to chip, you might use a sand wedge to chip, and someone else might use a three wood off the green to chip. You choose the tool that you want to use. You have complete freedom. You don’t have someone looking over your shoulder.

Having the power to choose is a motivational factor on the job. This is a major reason that micro-managers tend to de-motivate. They rob their employees of the power to choose.

Tell them your time frame for achieving those goals. This will make you accountable. Sometimes the sheer will of not failing in front of others is the push you need.

Motivation Tip Number Two: Strive on Time Limits

Procrastination is a huge motivation killer. Put time limits on the project you are doing. Always be very specific with your time limits.

The feeling that there is a time crunch will motivate you to get your project done. Use this self motivation tip on anything you need to get done, whether it is a small or large project. Be careful though and make your time frame realistic, it is not healthy to create unnecessary stress from a goal you set for yourself.

For example, if you need to clean the house, give yourself a reason why it has to be done at a certain time, like: “I have to clean the house before the kids get home from school because it is good for them to have a clean home.” Then start as soon as possible, don’t wait until 30 minutes before they get home to start, that will create stress and anxiety.

Self Motivating Tip Number Three: Treat Yourself

Just like Pavlov’s dog, you need to be rewarded when you finish a goal so that you get satisfaction from it and so you have something to look forward to as a reward for finishing. This self motivation tip is pretty easy.

Just don’t wallow in your own pride forever. Always set new goals when one is accomplished. Successful people are always looking for new ways to improve themselves and their lives.

Motivating Tip Number Four: Create a Positive Mindset

Of all the tips this is probably the most important. It’s hard to stay motivated when you are giving yourself a hard time. Try to stay positive, even when you really don’t want to finish the task or things aren’t working out as planned.

For example, instead of thinking of all the reasons why you don’t want to exercise think of how great you will feel and how good you will continue to look if you stick to your workout routine. Associate positive feelings with exercising and negative ones to not exercising.

Tip Number Five: Give Yourself a Break And Stay Healthy

You may have problems implementing the other four self motivation tips if you are just trying to hoist too many goals and objectives upon yourself. Your lack of motivation may be due to burnout. If this is the case, then just take a break. You probably deserve it.

Learn to relax and be able to take your mind off of your goal for a while to refresh your mind and body. Work on staying healthy and fit. You will have a hard time thinking of and achieving noteworthy goals if your mind and body aren’t healthy. I am not saying you have to push around weights all day, but do the proper amount of exercise that is right for you to feel healthy, fit, and full of vitality.

Something less important catches our attention, or we just don’t feel like doing what we need to do. Even a person who is normally highly motivated can sometimes have a hard time getting started on an important task.

Is there a solution? There are probably dozens of them. Below are six of the best self motivation techniques that consistently work when used. Try them all, but if you find even one or two here that work for you, you’ll be on your way.

Self Motivation Techniques That Work

1. Talk to get motivated. One of my favorite ways to create energy and motivation is to talk. Once I tell my wife about the article I’m going to write, I’m out of my slump and back at the keyboard. For less inspiring tasks, talk about the larger goals it will help you achieve.

2. Stimulate your desire. Seeing their potential future motivates many to sign up for get-rich-quick plans. The really good salesmen can put you in your imagined dream home in minutes, and make you feel motivated to do anything to make it real. Learn to be your own salesman.

3. Stimulate your pain. One Neuro-Linguistic Programming technique is to mentally link pain with not acting. It is like when finally stop hitting that snooze button on the alarm, and get up because you think you might lose your job. Just imagine any bad consequences that may occur if you don’t do what you need to do.

4. Find a true interest. If you have no interest in what you are doing, it might mean you need to do something else. If it’s just a task you dislike, but it needs to be done, relate it clearly in your mind to the greater goal. I don’t like to drive, but I don’t have a motivation problem when I’m driving to the mountains for a vacation.

5. Boost your energy. You need energy for self motivation. Coffee may help for a while, if caffeine doesn’t create other problems for you. Exercising and sleeping well help too. Yo should also watch out for sugary foods. The “sugar blues”kill motivation. Once you find energy boosters that work for you, make a list and keep it handy for future use.

6. Take any small step. I’ve found if I commit to raking up one bag of leaves, I soon want to finish all the yard work. Taking any small step towards your goals is a great self motivation technique. To make this even easier, break larger goals down into small steps.

Motivation techniques really do work, but don’t ask me how to get motivated to use them. In any case, you were motivated enough to read this far, so you’ll be fine. Oh, and humor is number seven. A good laugh can overcome that feeling of being overwhelmed that sucks away self motivation.

There have been several motivational theories created by people over time, however seeing how they are theories and not proven facts there are some that people believe and others that people do not believe. One of the most popular and well known theories comes from Abraham Maslow and it is called the hierarchy of needs.

This theory is taught in many philosophy and psychology classes in schools all over North America. It states that people would like to satisfy different needs and some of them we find more important than others. Not only this but some of these needs are more pressing then the others. As we satisfy one of our needs, it then becomes less important to us, other needs therefore become more important to us and become motivators of our behavior.

Maslow therefore says we have a hierarchy of needs. The most proponent needs that we have are shown at the bottom of the ladder, as the prepotency decreases we progresses upwards. The first need is called self actualization needs. Self actualization needs require meeting your own best potential and for you to do your own best things.

The next one is called esteem. Esteem involves having respect for other individuals having respect for yourself and also recognition. After this we have belonging which is being affiliated being accepted and also being apart of something. The second last one is safety needs, which is being physically safe and having psychological security. Last but not least there is physiological which includes hunger, thirst, sex and rest.

Another motivational theory is that we are motivated by money. Money means different things for different people. Money can mean status, survival, belonging achievement and a lot of other things, you can take your pick. In the end it all simply depends on the type of person that you are.
